NORFOLK, Va. — The Navy submarine named in honor of the city of Norfolk is set to be inactivated after 31 years of active service.
The Navy says an inactivation ceremony is scheduled for Thursday at Naval Station Norfolk.
The 360-foot Los Angeles-class attack submarine was commissioned in 1983 and built by Newport News Shipbuilding. It's the third naval ship to be named in honor of its namesake city of Norfolk.
During its years of service, the submarine completed 15 deployments to the North Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea, Central Command and European Command.
The USS Norfolk returned from its final deployment in August. It will remain in Norfolk until January before it begins the decommissioning process at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Maine.
