PORTLAND, Maine — Coast Guard Sector Northern New England's new commanding officer is taking over the responsibilities of his new position.

Capt. Michael A. Baroody assumed his new role during a ceremony in Portland, Maine, on Thursday.

Baroody replaces Capt. Brian S. Gilda, who Coast Guard officials say is leaving as part of a regularly scheduled change of command. Baroody comes to the northern New England sector from Sector Houston-Galveston, Texas, where he served as the deputy commander.

The northern New England sector includes Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and eastern New York.

In an average year, officials say the crews at Sector Northern New England conduct 440 search and rescue cases, save 25 lives, assist 656 people in distress.

Rear Admiral Linda L. Fagan presided over the change of command ceremony.
