KITTERY, Maine — The Navy says the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is getting a new commander this year.

The Navy announced Thursday that it gave the nod to Capt. Daniel Ettlich, who currently serves as deputy for shipyard operations at the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, D.C.

He said in a statement that repair and maintenance on attack submarines at Portsmouth is more important than ever and that "returning these ships back to the fleet on time is mission priority one."

Ettlich has served at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in Hawaii; Naval Intermediate Maintenance Facility Pacific Northwest in Bangor, Washington; U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Baghdad, Iraq; and Submarine Squadron 11 in San Diego.

His career has included service aboard submarines, teaching assignments, and his recent stint as business and strategic planning at the Puget Sound shipyard.
