NEW LONDON, Conn. — The superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy has been nominated for a promotion that would take her to the service's headquarters as a deputy commandant.

Rear Adm. Sandra Stosz became the first woman to lead the academy in New London in 2011.

She was nominated by President Obama for the position of deputy commandant for mission support in Washington and a promotion from rear admiral to vice admiral. The Coast Guard says the appointment requires confirmation by the Senate.

The promotion would take effect later this year after Stosz completes her tour as the academy superintendent.

Stosz graduated from the academy in 1982.
