Big news for petty officers and hopefuls is just around the corner. Thousands of sailors will find out if they made E-4, E-5 and E-6 when the spring advancement lists come out the week before Memorial Day weekend. Spring petty officer results before the Memorial Day break.
Even though the holiday, which marks the start of summer for most, comes early this year — May 25th — the Navy personnel brass say they'll release the names of the thousands of names of those getting advanced before will meet it's unofficial goal of releasing names of those being advanced to E-4 through E-6 before the fleet takes a three-day Memorial Day break, an unofficial goal each year for the spring lists.

This cycle, The Navy expects to release the quotas, by rating, on Monday, May 18. Commands are set to start notifying selectees on Wednesday, May 20. , which means the current plans that commands will be able to notify those selected for advancement by Wednesday the 20th.
This year, officials are expecting a simultaneous release of active-duty, reserve full-time support and selectedve reserve quotas and names this year in an effort to standardize the release. Reservists sat for their exams in February and active-duty sailors in March.
Personnel officials say that tThe complete quotas are still being worked, personnel officials said, but already the picture for this cycle's advancements are emerging.
Overall, officials say advancement opportunity will drop slightly across all three petty officer grades, though they didn't say by how much. Last fall, there was a 27.6 percent chance overall of being advanced in the three grades combined, up from a 23.4 percent last spring.

The reason for the drop is high retention across the Navy, but even with that bit of bad news, they say advancements have stabilized and are at near the 10-year average in all three grades.
The good news this year is that there are opportunities to advance in every rating and paygrade, there will be no ratings with no quotas at all and fewer ratings that will see all eligible sailors advance — both of which were stated goals of the chief of naval personnel, Vice Adm. Bill Moran, when he took the job nearly two years ago.
