COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — The U.S. Navy is naming one of its warships after the upstate New York village that's home to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Navy Secretary Ray Mabus was in Cooperstown over the weekend to honor the professional baseball players who served in World War II. During an awards ceremony held Saturday at Doubleday Field, Mabus said the Navy's newest ship in the fleet will be called the Cooperstown.
The ship is a littoral combat ship, a new class of ships that is designed to operate close to shore.
The vessel will be the first Navy ship to bear the name Cooperstown.
Officials say 388-foot ship will be built at a Lake Michigan shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin, by Lockheed Martin.
The announcement was made a day before Sunday's Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
