YUMA, Ariz. — A U.S. Navy vessel honoring the city of Yuma has been christened.
The Yuma Sun reports that the USNS Yuma, which is nearing completion, was celebrated with a christening ceremony in Mobile, Alabama, on Saturday.
Former Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano broke a bottle of sparkling wine across the bow.
Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus said in a statement that the event celebrates the longtime partnership Yuma has with the Navy and Marine Corps.
The ship can transport up to 600 tons of military cargo and operate in waterways. It will include a flight deck for helicopter operations and a ramp for vehicles to quickly drive off the ship.
Officials say it is 90 percent finished and will begin water tests and sea trials in the coming months.
