PASCAGOULA, Miss. — Ingalls Shipbuilding has been awarded a $13.7 million contract to perform design work for the U.S. Navy's newest amphibious warship, the LX(R).

Ingalls president Brian Cuccias said in a news release the LX(R) is intended to replace the Navy's Harpers Ferry- and Whidbey Island-class dock landing ships.

He says they will employ the same hull as the San Antonio class, of which Ingalls has delivered 10 to the Navy, with another -- the Portland -- under construction. Ingalls has also received more than $258 million in advance procurement funding for a 12th in the San Antonio class, the Fort Lauderdale.

The U.S. Department of Defense announced June 30 that Ingalls would perform the majority of the contract design work for the LX(R).
