A junior enlisted sailor died after a vehicle accident Sept. 7 near Naples, Italy, officials confirmed this week.

Hospitalman Jacob Weiss-Buffa, 21, suffered fatal injuries in the accident, which took place in the town of Casal di Principe, right down the road from Naval Support Activity Naples.

An unidentified Italian citizen in a different vehicle also died as a result of the accident, according to Naval Hospital Naples spokeswoman Christina Clarke.

A second U.S. service member was injured in the accident, but was treated at a local hospital and released, she said.

Italian authorities are investigating the accident, as is the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Clarke said.

“We are unable to comment further on either ongoing investigation,” she said.

Weiss-Buffa originally hailed from Reno, Nevada, according to Clarke.

He enlisted in 2016 and arrived at Naples, his first duty station, in August 2016, according to Navy records.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our shipmate and a member of our local community,” Clarke said. “We offer our sincere condolences to the families of all those involved.”
