SAN FRANCISCO — A Peruvian tall ship carrying more than 100 naval cadets standing on the vessel’s four masts has arrived in San Francisco to celebrate 170 years of relations between the South American nation and California.
The Union passed under a foggy Golden Gate Bridge Friday on its way to Embarcadero-Pier 17, where it will remain until Monday when it heads for Vancouver.
The 379-foot (115-meter) ship will open to visitors Saturday for an exhibition about Lima-born Capt. Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra, who explored the California coast in the 18th Century.

The Union’s inaugural arrival coincides with the celebration of the foundation of the Peruvian Consulate in San Francisco in 1849, when Peruvians arrived for the Gold Rush.
The sailing vessel serves as a training ship for Peruvian cadets.
